Wind Caves & Mt. Rushmore

After a morning breakfast, we decided to head to Wind Cave National Park. Once inside the park, we saw a herd of bison near the road.

We decided to go on the "Natural Entrance" tour of Wind Cave. We had an hour before the tour started, so we had a nice lunch on the lawn outside.

The Natural Entrance tour is about an hour and fifteen minutes (but we went a little longer). The tour is about 300 steps mostly down (with 11 up). Wind Cave is famous for box work. It has 95% of all the box work in the world. Box work is the natural formation of calcite between the softer limestone. Wash away the limestone and you're left with box work. (Think about removing the bricks but leaving the mortar.)

After Wind Cave we stopped briefly in Custer to restock some supplies. We're here for a few days so some "fresh" vegetables would be nice. (We are in South Dakota so fresh is relative.)

From Custer we decided to go back to Mt. Rushmore to see it during the day. We walked the Avenue of Flags, saw a few movies about Rushmore and generally enjoyed learning the history of Mt. Rushmore.

From Mt. Rushmore, we headed into Hill City to check the gas prices (always a challenge). We stumbled upon the evening shootout along the main street.

We returned to the camp site to a crock pot dinner ready to eat.
